Out of boredom, I thought that I would just check my UNIVIS account and see if my BAKK2 Thesis grade was in already. Didn't really expect it to be in yet, but checking never hurt, right?

..........WELL IMAGINE MY SURPRISE WHEN IT WAS ALREADY IN AND I FUCKING ACED IT!!. An 1er!! ON MY BAKK2!! OH MY FUCKING GOD FUCK YESSSS. I ALMOST WISHED I CHECKED THIS IN THE MORNING BECAUSE I CAN APPARENTLY CALL NO ONE AND BOTHER THEM IN PERSON. *twitches in GLEE*

....OKAY WAIT CARMEN JUST SAW ON FB AND CALLED ME. I AM NOW SLIGHTLY LESS HOPPED UP ON EXCITEMENT NOW THAT I HAD THAT CONVO, THOUGH I AM TOTALLY CALLING MY PARENTS AND MY GRANDMA TO PREEN/GLOAT TOMORROW. ESPECIALLY THE LATTER-- so I might not be as academically accomplished as my cousins, and this grade won't really drag my cumulative GPA up much, BUT IT IS STILL THE HIGHEST GRADE on what is one of the main academic papers of my ~university career~, and this means that BOTH of my big BAKK/Bachelor's Thesis papers have been 1er grades. SO SUCK ON THAT, HAH!

SERIOUSLY, I AM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW *TWIRLS*.

[livejournal.com profile] cheshire_tabby, [livejournal.com profile] gwy, [livejournal.com profile] laliandra and [livejournal.com profile] laulan, THANK YOU GUYS AGAIN SO MUCH FOR BEING MY GRACIOUS, ARTICULATE LJ INTERVIEW PEEPS ~*and*~ extra super special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] cheshire_tabby and [livejournal.com profile] laulan for going beyond the call of duty and awesome and being wonderful beta readers ♥ ♥ ♥. HEE THANK YOUUUUUUUU BB ♥ I DIDN'T WANT TO JINX MYSELF EVEN BY THINKING ABOUT IT, because lol in the end I did catch myself going "....well fuck, I think this is actually pretty good!" but ohhhh was I so nervous about how my prof would grade it. AND NOW I AM EVEN MORE RELIEVED THAN I WAS AT FIRST. It feels ~~so good~~ Lal! I think I might just go buy some dresses at Mango next week that I don't actually need but still want to celebrate XDD

I WAS ACTUALLY THINKING ABOUT THAT! But then my occasional sense-making brain segment was all "CHANNEL YOUR INCOHERENT SQUEAKING NOISES INTO OBNOXIOUS ALLCAPS SQUEE INSTEAD MOO HA HA" ♥

I THINK I WILL GO LISTEN TO ADAM AND IMAGINE HIM SINGING VICTORY SONGS TO ME NOW :DD

OKAY SO YOU TOTALLY DESERVE IT!

DRESSES OMG YES TAKE PICTURES AND THEN I WILL TAKE PICTURES OF THE WORK CLOTHES THAT I AM BUYING AND WE CAN HAVE A FASHION SQUEE!!!

I MEANT IT ABOUT THE CALLING! I LOVE TO BE CALLED!

ALSO, ALSO I SAID I WOULD WRITE YOU SOMETHING AND I HAVE STARTED AND IT IS NOT DONE BUT HERE IS SOME OF IT

It all started, as these things tend to do, at around 2am. Adam was trying and failing to sleep, partly because, holy shit, he was in the Final Three of American Idol, but mostly because Kris was awake and reading and wouldn’t stop huffing and sighing.

Eventually Adam gave up and said, “What?”

Kris gave him a serious look over the top of his glasses. Adam had never found glasses particularly sexy before, but sometimes Kris did this thing where he looked like a billion stern but secretly kinky librarian fantasies come true at once. Adam had never had librarian fantasises before either, but then American Idol was nothing if not all about journeys of self-discovery.

“What, what?” Kris repeated, “I wasn’t doing anything.”

“You so were. You were being antsy and it’s driving me crazy. What is it? Just tell me, and then maybe we can get some fucking sleep. It’s not like we can lie in, we have a promo thing to shoot.”

Kris sighed because Kris hates mornings and especially morning photoshoots, Adam knew. Adam liked morning photoshoots the best. It meant he got to wear professionally applied make up all day.

“Stop looking so pleased with yourself. I bet that stuff is really bad for your skin anyway, you shouldn’t leave it on for the rest of the day,” Kris said sniffily and Adam laughed.

Kris lifted his book up again and Adam asked, quickly, “No, seriously, what’s up? I can hear you fretting from here.”

Kris sighed and laid the book down carefully, fingers tracing over the letters of the spine.

“I don’t know, man. It just all feels really surreal today. Don’t ask me why. I just wanna go home to my own bed and have my Mom be there and I’m really hungry and I know that they don’t have what I really want in the kitchen.”

“Aw, honey. What is it that you want?”

“It’s such a random thing, no one would ever think of it,”

Adam raised his hand in his very best know it all third grader impression. “Oh! Oh! Can I guess? Pick me! I know!”

Kris turned round to sit against the wall, facing Adam properly. He held out an invisible microphone. “Your topic is ‘Things that Kris Allen might crave in the middle of the night’.” He was using his Serious Interviewer Voice.

“Is it grits?” Adam said, smiling sweetly.

“Oh, I’m afraid not. And that’s 5 points off for bad Southern stereotyping.”
“No one said anything about penalties,” Adam pouted and then he thought of something. “Wait, are there prizes?”

“What, American Idol not competition enough for you?” Kris deadpanned, putting his book on the table. “Want another guess?”

“Cookies?” Adam hazarded and Kris made the Family Feud ‘wrong answer’ buzzer noise. “Oh dear, ladies and gentleman, I don’t think this contestant is going to get to the final round,” he said, a little too gleefully for Adam’s liking.

“Wait, what show are we playing, here?”

“It’s my show,” said Kris. He smiled dorkily. “The Kris Allen Show. You are nothing more than a lowly contestant who sucks at guessing. Jeez, and you have such an advantage.”

“What’s that?”

Kris gave him a look that only he could get away with, confused concern with an underlying edge of ‘that’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard’.

“You’re my friend?” The ‘duh’ may have been silent but Adam heard it, all the same.

I MEAN, I HAVE A VERY NICE MENTAL PIC OF SEXY!LIBRARIAN ADAM THANKS TO THAT PIC ON YEATS' KRADAM FICLIST, BUT YEAH.

AI AND ~~JOURNEYS OF SELF-DISCOVERY~~! And of course Adam loves the morning shoots for the swank professional make-up jobs! I mean, ffffffuck even I would be all 'DO ME PLZ' and I normally get really irritated when I wear make-up (the urge to rub my eyes or compulsively check if my lipstick is still on lol)

AND THE KRIS ALLEN SHOW! BAD SOUTHERN STEREOTYPING LOLOL one day I actualfax want to eat grits though THE BOYS ARE SO CUTE AND ADORABLE and lol now I am kind of curious what that food is... SANDWICHES?? SOUP? SMORES? CHEESEBURGERS? PIE??

Thank youuuu!! This is probably going to be one of my proudest uni moments lol ^^

(In retrospect, I wish I harnessed this feeling earlier in my studies, or that our major had more seminars than GIANT LECTURES OF MASS PEOPLE CRAMMED IN ENCLOSED SPACES, because damn if I don't work better in smaller groups where you actually know who you are working for, and what specifically you are working towards. Once a small school student, always with the small school study/work habits I guess!)

Hee. :D

(Sometimes I wish I'd had a small school experience - in the bigger systems I was mostly lost except for that one time I was put in an Advanced Maths class. I sometimes wonder if I would've been a better student in a smaller system and perhaps I would've actually gone on to Uni the way I always intended to when I was a kid but never eventually did.)

(I must say that though I sure as hell bitched and moaned about it, and had my phases of being quite unhappy and feeling stifled because of the size of our school, it was probably one of the best decisions my parents could have made for me, education-wise. I mean, there were the usual cons that came with spending 10 years in a school where my particular class size never topped 10 people, and I actually graduated as one of a class of FIVE-- but the education and attention from teachers we got was top notch. I will forever be bitter that our art program was so anemic due to lack of more interested students though!! GRRR forever. How big was your school? And was your major also one of those where you start at the same time with a bazillion other people?)

Schools plural for me - I moved around Australia a little as I was growing up and attended a few different primary schools (all of which had classes number 30+ I think the biggest was pushing 38 students). Then my High School in the ACT had big classes as well. When I got to college (read as: the equivalent of the last two years of secondary schooling) I accidentally ended up in Majoring in English (all of which were classes over 20 students) and Minoring in Medieval History (which were probably the smallest classes and also had the awesomest teacher).

Of course all of that amounted to nothing because I ended up moving to England (and I didn't take the final exam because I'd already decided to start over in the UK). A Levels here absolutely kicked my ass as I'd a) never been examined before and b) learned pretty fast that the UK schooling system is way more intense than the Australian one. Needless to say through a combination of crumbling under the pressure and my own general laziness I ended up with woeful marks that I couldn't even wave in the general direction of a University.

I was a good student up until we move to the ACT. My parents blame this on me developing a) a wide group of friends for the first time in my life b) general high-school bullying of the smart kids and c) me wanting to lower myself to the same level as my aforementioned friends. I blame it on the weird fact that the ACT's high school starts at Year 7 and the rest of the country starts it at Year 8 - so I essentially went from the middle of the last year of primary education straight into the middle of the first year of secondary education with no preparation. And even though I was ahead a year due to a quirk between Victoria and South Australia I ended up very confused for that first year. (And then, I would say, by the end of year 10 you could blame everything else on being a teenager.)

And, wow, that is a lot of exposition. In summary - I turned into a terrible student but was good enough at pretending to be brilliant that my teachers, already dealing with larger class sizes, didn't quite catch what was going on until it was too late. (And I was getting a non-grade in Classical Studies because I'd never done any coursework, though I didn't do too badly in the exams - despite being rubbish at exams) I guess the blame lies across both myself and the teachers.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. This was really interesting to read though-- I am always fascinated by how other people went to school, since mine was so relatively static after second grade (we moved around a lot when I was young, but I was too young to really be affected much by it schoolwise-- jumping around from Kindergarden to second grade in different English-speaking schools in HK, M'sia and S'pore wasn't that much of a shock apparently, eventhough I was too hyper to take naps and would sneak off to read books lol).

...what does ACT stand for though? I tried a quick google and didn't really come up with much. Though ahhh, I get the feeling of coasting along on certain subjects and then finding out that when it comes down to crunch time, one is painfully under-prepared and there is no feasible way for the teachers to help, or for oneself to sack up in time to survive exams. HELLO, MY CRASH AND BURN FAILURE IN MATHS (seriously, I was the idiot who got 5/40 points on exams, though I was acing everything else. Fucking NUMBERS AND THEIR NOT MAKING SENSEEEEE)

The fact that there are so many variations of education plans have probably ruined so many people's school days, I reckon. Also know a bunch of people who were screwed over by the intricacies of the three-tiered German/Swiss/Austrian school system, where you get separated into pretty rigid levels based on your grades in like, 5th and 6th grade, and this holds right up until you graduate.

So, if I am parsing this correctly, did you actually end up going to uni or are you working right now? (my reading comprehension is quite possibly addled and I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question)

I'm glad there was something interesting in it! It's difficult for me to condense my life up to 2002 most of the time. (Fun fact - as of June this year this is the longest that I've ever lived in one...town, we'll say, because we did move house once since moving to the North-East of England) People often end up with rambling accounts when they ask IRL (or they get: "I was born in New Zealand and moved to Australia when I was three where we lived in - Melbourne for two years, Adelaide for seven, Perth for three months and Canberra for the remaining four or five. Then we moved here, we lived down south for six months or so first, though." and they just look at me all :O)

I did vary back and forth over calling the ACT versus Canberra - but I never know which people are more likely to recognise. ACT = Australian Capital Territory. Which often gets more commonly referred to as Canberra even though the actual bit that is Canberra only makes up a smallish part of the territory.

I never did end up at Uni - over the past couple of years I have flirted attending as a mature student and then I remember that I'm shit at exams and that I possibly wouldn't learn a huge amount from a Creative Writing course (doesn't have exams!) that I don't already know. So instead I work in a Bingo Hall (I'm officially a "Bingo Operative" which makes my job sound so much more exciting than it actually is) which is about five minutes from my home and wish I had the discipline to sit down and write original fiction every day (and stick to one idea) so that whole 'I want to be a published author' thing can stop being such a pipe dream.

(S'not a stupid question, btw, often times I meander around my point in quite an unclear manner)

Heh, I used to have that same problem when I was a kid before we settled in Bangkok and I can now just say I lived there for 11 years and just flap about with the previous SEA countries we were in. I do admit that a weirdly competitive part of me used to wish that we moved around EVEN MORE though, it was/is kind of a dick-measuring contest with Int'l school brats, comparing how many countries you (=your parents) moved around in.

I have never actually heard of the ACT acronym, though Canberra is something our geography classes in school managed to hammer in. This kind of reminds me that my knowledge of Australia past the basics is pretty spotty... all extra reading of my Dad's old Australian Gourmet Traveller issues aside. MMMMH FOOD TRIVIA :D

BINGO OPERATIVE! That does sound totally awesome! ...how does one become one though? Being close to home sounds like a pretty sweet deal though. And I am crossing my fingers for your orig fic undertakings-- honestly, I am already always pretty awed by your sheer output when writing fic already. Fight fight kill!
