Lists and lists (Or: As far as my backlog is concerned, 2009 ain't over yet!)

BOOKS READ and MOVIES WATCHED IN 2009

BOOKS:
- "Generation Kill" by Evan Wright
- "Havemercy" by Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett
- "The Demon's Lexicon" by Sarah Rees Brennan
- "Dreams from My Father" by Barack Obama
- "The Lies of Locke Lamora" by Scott Lynch
- "Red Seas Under Red Skies" by Scott Lynch
- "Death By Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries" by Neil DeGrasse Tyson
- "World War Z" by Max Brooks
- "Naked Pictures of Famous People" by Jon Stewart
- "Salt: A World History" by Mark Kurlansky
- "Moab is My Washpot" by Stephen Fry (did I read it this year, or last? Can't remember)
- "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman

Total: 12. Kind of totally embarrassing when seen over a year, and I sure as hell hope that I have just forgotten some, since I fail at taking note or blogging about these things. And most of my reading of "real books" this year actually happened when I was in Bangkok or traveling with Carmen. Must try and improve in 2010!

MOVIES:
- The Princess and the Frog
- (500)Days of Summer
- New Moon
- Watchmen
- 17 Again
- Up
- My Bloody Valentine
- Friday the 13th (2009)
- Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince
- I Love You, Man
- Inglourious Basterds
- Monsters VS Aliens 3D
- Star Trek Reboot
- X-men Origins: Wolverine
- The Hangover
- District 9
- Antique Bakery
- The Fall
- The Duchess
- Defiance
- Thumbsucker
- Let the Right One In
- Martyrs (UGHHHHHHHH)
- Twilight
- The Onion Movie

Total: 25. I think. Again, I fail at keeping record of these things, and actually had some 2008 stuff mixed in at first. Am probably forgetting a bunch that I watched on DVD as well. Hmm

I was thinking of doing comics/manga and TV series too, but eh. Nawww. Am not that OCD about it, yet. And TV series aside, I don't think I was very prolific wrt to the former anyways, finally getting to read Watchmen and some of Osamu Tezuka's older works aside.

In other news, I didn't manage to leave the house today and just tooled around the net forever (I made a giant sticky post for my art though, god that took ages!), but I did finally have a mad cleaning session. Everything is now nice and clean (to an extent), and there are fresh bathmats and dishtowels and sponges and I just about had to take pictures to commemorate this rare state of affairs lest Sabrina returns. I am either expecting her back today or tomorrow, and if she doesn't show I can at least be confident that she might be gone for a while (FINGERS CROSSED). Which makes that fact that she forgot THREE GIANT OPEN BAGS OF TRASH under the sink and the general state of everything in our common area even more reprehensible, but what else is new. fffuck did I summon her presence by mentioning her??
I did make the no less disgusting discovery that her preferred cigarette disposing method is to just throw the butts into old candle-holder glasses or mugs filled with water though. There were three hiding behind the piles of random mugs and dishes that I cleared off when I wiped down the kitchen, and wow does that ever have an ~~aroma. Why would you keep this crap? Does she find the stench of stale smoke and disgusting soup that results in the mugs appealing? I dumped the goop and tried to rinse it out a few times, but the ash has totally encrusted. Have liberally drizzled cleaning solution/Scheuermilch on everything though, and I don't even care that I dumped it all in a pot that she will probably use to cook in.

EDIT: FUCK FUCK FUCK she just came back. Ugh

fuck yes locke lamora, i wrote that fandom for yuletide and just sent [livejournal.com profile] laulan my copy of the book because it's so awesome. XDDDDDDD THIRD ONE COMES OUT IN MARCH have we had this discussion already? i feel like we have.....

um, your roommate sounds like a horror show. how long til you can NOT live with her anymore? :O my ex-gf used to use candleholders as ashtrays and finally one day in a fit of pique i threw them all away. UGGGHHHHHHH. i hate people who are genuinely dirty that way, it's so gross. :(

[identity profile] kaiserkuchen.livejournal.com 2010-01-04 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw! And have that story open in a tab that will probably be read as a reward for when I get Uni Shit Done tomorrow :DD AND WHAAAAT IS THIS CONFIRMED?? March *_* Nice nice nice ♥ And I'll be in BKK so I could flip through my copy of the second book again, or maybe even buy the new one already, yesss~~ And iirc you just asked me if I'd read the second book and I basically forgot to reply because it was around the time I had to pack my shit to go to No-Internet-Land AKA visit my grandparents ^^ WHOOPS MY BAD.
And heh, I'm sure Andy will love it! I also read it thanks to some glowing reviews from my friends and didn't regret a minute <33

SHE IS. I think my tag devoted to her sadly has far too many entries, and oh god, we've been roommates since I started uni in September 2006. And the way things are looking, I'll probably be the one moving out first this August, even though she is like in her 12th semester by now. Just my luck that she is one of those assholes who seem to take forever to be done with uni for no real reason :||
...I did just now knock on her door and "talk" to her though, lol basically rattled off a jumbled, incomplete list of things that I hope we could get done this year ("I think it would be best if we both try to clean up after ourselves and leave no traces so that we see as little of each other as possible" and etc etc) and holy fuck I was shaking a bit when I returned to my room. Pathetic, but at least I said something and even if nothing happens (which is probably the case), I can at least not stew about it and stress out and compose angry hypothetical rants that I never end up saying to her anyways for a while.

TL;DR uh sorry for unloading on you up there. Ahem.

[identity profile] betweenthebliss.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
ahh not at all honey, i have had insane roommate situations myself in the past (like the stoner who didn't know how to clean anything, or the spoiled princess who'd make herself a four course dinner and then laugh when i suggested she wash her dishes, or the ex-painkiller-addict who stole stuff from everyone in the house and gave herself an herbal abortion once....) but good for you for saying something to her, seriously, i can't believe you've had to put up with that shit for so long. >:O

and YES, 'the republic of thieves' is confirmed for a march release date. he published the prologue (a nice long one!) on his website, you should go check it out if you haven't seen it. XDDDDD

also, that icon, LUUUUUUUULZ.

[identity profile] kaiserkuchen.livejournal.com 2010-01-12 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
OH MAN WHAAAAAAAAAAT. Damn dude, I bow down before your roomie tales! And whaaaaat, a herbal abortion what what whaaaaaaat O_o That is just. Wow.

I am seriously thrilled to hear this and will be checking the website out now! Hadn't been on there since last summer where I hit the internets, anxious for my next hit once I finished the second book XDD

♥ ♥

to be fair, the stoner i could deal with, because i was unemployed for a lot of the time i was living w/her, so cleaning gave me something to do. XD however, the other two were in the same house along with me and six other people who all had their own neuroses and damages. plus my crazy at-the-time-gf, who was impossible to manage even when she was the only one i was living with. -___-;;;; let's just say i don't miss THAT place at all, lol.

and yeah, given that i've been waiting for the fifth installment of a song of ice and fire for over four years now, i need a distraction. :E thank you scott lynch for being awesome. XD

[identity profile] kaiserkuchen.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I can't even begin to imagine living in a house with so many people. I mean seriously, woaahhh :O. At least that place probably made you more resilient by dint of making it out of there in one whole piece? And you could probably mine some awesomely crazy anecdotes for your writing? Oh man...

Ahh, I think that is also another one of these book series that I have been meaning to read for aaaaaaaages. I hope I can get some serious reading done when I'm back home in BKK, ahhh ♥

[identity profile] betweenthebliss.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
it was a pretty big house, but still, it was intense. no one who's heard those stories wonders why i want to live alone, lmao. but yeah, definitely more resilient, DEFINITELY crazy anecdotes. herbal abortion girl alone is like, three novels' worth of crazy. *eyeroll*

and omg, you totally need to read them-- they're incredible, really, martin is a master. if you like fantasy at all, you will be hooked. :D :D :D

Oh god your roommate. D:

I use goodreads.com to keep track of the books I've read, which kinda works for me! I just wish there was a similar website for movies. (I am totally OCD about these things, it's horrible.)

Was The Demon's Lexicon any good? That's on my to-be-read-rly-soon pile. (And I've just started on Havemercy, heh.)

[identity profile] kaiserkuchen.livejournal.com 2010-01-04 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I would say "neues Jahr, neues Glück", but lol I don't really believe that this will be true >_>;;

I keep hearing good things about that website! Though I am always loath to sign-up for such sites because I inevitably forget my password and never log on anymore XDD

It was! I am very excited about the second book coming out at some point. You probably also read her HP fic back in the day, right? Some bits in the book had that same emotional punch that certain scenes in like, If You've A Ready Mind (that Ravenclaw!Draco fic) and her other fics had on me, and I was in general just really engrossed. Loved the characters, and especially Nick, ahh his POV of thinly veined fury and disdain towards everyone but his brother is fantastic to read. Also, it's YA, so you can read it in like two days :Db

AND OMG HAVEMERCY ♥ Such a delightful read, and if you don't already know of its existence, you should totally check out the character art (http://halcyonjazz.livejournal.com/tag/havemercy) that [livejournal.com profile] halcyonjazz drew for it! Mmmmh, awesome.

I totally need to read more German books this year, but I don't know where to start beyond my two X'mas gifts lol something to try and tackle this year, I suppose!

I've mostly been good about keeping a record of my reading since I joined goodreads. I think it makes me feel accomplished, haha. I try to write reviews for everything, too. (And it's nice to be able to go back and have a look at what I read when and stuff. And what I thought about it. Since my memory is godawful.)

I think I still have her fic saved somewhere, yeah. :D Underwater Light was one of the first H/D fics I ever read, and I find her writing consistently charming. I do however find that there's often a big difference between people's fanfic and their prowriting, so yeah, curious!

And don't kill me, but I haaaated Havemercy. I just finished it today and I was so disappointed because I know so many people who loved it. Gah. (The character art really is awesome, though! Thanks for the link!)

I need to read more German books as well, but am hindered by the fact that I prefer reading things in their original language, and most of my to-read pile is originally English. :< I don't even remember the last German book that had me totally engrossed.

[identity profile] kaiserkuchen.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I have taken to scribbling notes in my shiny new agenda now lol at the very least I'll know when I bought the books? XDD

I still remember following and awaiting each new part of UL with bated breath, ahhh it's kind of mind-boggling, that one has been reading fic for so long. Well okay, for me it was random anime stuff as well since what, '97? I think? Oh man oh man, I actually must still have some random floppy discs with Ranma 1/2 and Sailor Moon fic saved to there somewhere... What was your first fandom, btw?

Awwww, well, nothing that can be done about that XDD What didn't you like about it, if I may ask? I did read some critiques about it that would've liked more about Havemercy, and some people that though the big SPOILER about two of the leads was kind of iffy, and I can see where both of these crits are coming from, and yeah. And glad to share links to [livejournal.com profile] halcyonjazz's art, she's someone I've been following for ages ahhh her art <33

SO BASICALLY YOU ARE ME in that situation ahhh XDD I keep trying to remember that I should really read more if only to pimp up my passive German skills if I am supposed to work here after all. EMBARASSING SECRET: I am kind of curious about reading Feuchtgebiete though I would never actually want to pay money for that book lol

I bought the Demon's Lexicon so I can read it on the 8h train ride home I'm facing this week. Having a book that really grabs you and doesn't require too much thinking makes these long train rides soo much more pleasant. (And YA is perfect for that. Although to be honest, YA is one of my favourite genres in any situation.)

Re: Havemercy, allow me to be lazy and just link you to my goodreads review. Basically, the book didn't engage me, AND parts of it really kinda upset me. (The SPOILER was just a bit wtf to me. I don't understand why they'd set up a relationship with so much sexual tension, then pull THAT sort of reveal without acknowledging the weirdness of having the relationship shift like that. Were they not aware of the subtext? But that's not a main point of critique of the book for me.)

OH GOD FEUCHTGEBIETE. I totally know what you mean and I feel the same way -- sickly fascination? It would gross me out SO MUCH though. :/ (And yeah, don't want to spend money on it either.)

Oh oops, forgot to add the reason why I was even using that icon.

My first fandom was the X-Files, specifically anything to do with Alex Krycek! (Did you watch the X-Files? He's this ... Russian spy person and pretty much fandom's favourite.) That's where I first found slash as well, hee. (The first slash fic I ever read was this kinky Mulder/Krycek PWP. Total revelation, haha.) I, too, have random shit still saved on floppy discs somewhere. Like, audio clips! Episode transcripts! And fic, of course. Man, the internet was such a brilliant, exciting place back then. *g* (Second big fandom was Weiß Kreuz. I remember downloading the episodes in Real Player format, split into 5 parts, which you'd then watch using a Real Player playlist. I think each part was a few MB, and the connection kept timing out and you'd have to restart the download and hahaha. Kids these days don't know how good they have it.)

So Ranma 1/2 and Sailor Moon were your first fandoms?

[identity profile] kaiserkuchen.livejournal.com 2010-03-22 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, now that I've read your review I totally see your points and I do agree with most of them (I was charmed by the ~love story between the two narrators though, so I guess I was an easy sell on that part). The fact that the dragons hardly got enough show-time of their own does feel glaring in omission, as does the fact that we hardly got to know most of the Dragon Corps.

AND OHHH FANDOMS. I have yet to watch more than snippets of X-Files here and there, but yeah...weren't it and Highlander some of the big Ur-Fandoms, also re: slash? I mean, of course the Ur-Fandom to end all fandoms is Star Trek but yeah XDD AND WEIß KREUZ AHHHHHHH lol I used to get SO FUCKING ANNOYED at how half the collective fandom would fuck up the spelling on Schuldig's name. SchuldiCH was at least a smidge better than Schulderich or whatever the other prevalent spellings were though... And the fangirl German! Hee :DD

And yeah, guilty as charged! Though I really started reading shounen-ai through Gundam Wing and also Weiß Kreuz, and through that somehow made the jump to Harry Potter. And THE REST WAS HISTORY. Or something XDD

[identity profile] luscious-mangos.livejournal.com 2010-01-05 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
12 books is a lot! i haven't looked into any books besides cookbooks and well...i just like to look at the pretty pictures of yummy food and then can't even decided what i'd like to try making so i still can't cook well *sigh*

movie theaters...when was the last time that i went to one? i only went like once a year back when i lived in beijing, but now i haven't gone at all coz i don't wanna go to german movies anyways.
and i don't know why but the only movies that do interest me are CG, so lately what i was happy to watch was Cloudy with a chance of meatballs, wall-e and planet 51.

[identity profile] kaiserkuchen.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I didn't count cookbooks, because lol... really?? They are some of the things I read the most though, ahh fantasizing about delicious food! I still vastly prefer eating out at glorious restaurants though, not gonna lie XD

Awwwww :(( Thank god for DVDs and Streaming/DLing things online, right? And lots of places here and in Germany still show the English versions! You just have to pay attention that it's an OV version

YOU STILL NEED TO WATCH UP THEN!! Good god that movie was so fantastic ♥ I saw the trailer for Cloudy and it looked pretty cute-- so the movie was good?

[identity profile] luscious-mangos.livejournal.com 2010-01-07 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
but in Cloudy with a chance of meatballs you don't need to fantasize about the food in cookbooks, IT RAINS FROM THE SKY!!! seriously, i love that movie~♥ GO WATCH IT!!!

i watched UP...but it just made me sad (T_T)

[identity profile] kaiserkuchen.livejournal.com 2010-01-07 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not playing in Austria yet!! Or I just haven't walked past a movie theater recently yet, either way. Will find out when we go watch GAMER tomorrow ahhhh Micheal C. Hall as the baddie ♥ I look forward to the cheesy action :D

AND THEN HAPPY THOUGH, RIGHT?? I mean, I was basically in tears thanks to that montage in the beginning, but HELLO THERE WERE TALKING DOGS. I love Dug so damn much~~
