Hee, confession time here, but since I have so few friends that I can legit schlep to watch Thai movies with me I had such a gap in my viewings of Popular Thai Movies That Made it Big Overseas**... Slowly worked my way up to seeing Ong Bak a year or so ago though, and it was a GERMAN-DUBBED VERSION which was like hilarity times ten. Especially in the bits where people were speaking in Northeastern-dialect and you could tell where the dubbers just went "........THE HELL ARE THEY TALKING ABOUTTTT" and just left those dialogue bits as is. Quite the jarring transition, that was XD Still haven't seen "Tom Yum Goong" (THEY CALL IT "WARRIOR KING" IN ENGLISH?? Omg lollll for a whole 'nother reason than the obvious marketing ploy that was behind the Thai title, hee!) except for the awesome and hilarious cameos Tony Jaa keeps making in Mum Jokmok's own "The Bodyguard" action movies where he plays this exaggerated hyper-earnest idiot yet still badass version of his character. Every time I see Tony Jaa mentioned I always hear him yelling "WHERE THE FUCK IS MY ELEPHANT??" (CHANG GUU YUU NAIIIII) from those scenes XD
Chocolate is actually good? Will have to check it out then! I just remember reading a pretty unimpressed review from the Bangkok Post reviewer guy (who is admittedly more of an indie film dude than action) and just forgetting about it.
** some examples off the top of my head of not so recent movies that I have seen and ADORED though: Ruang Talok Hok Gao/6ixtynin9 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-WLwEyg2tA) (Mew Lalita is EXCELLENT), Jan Dara (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gxQVZD19tA&feature=related) (THE VIOLIN! Also this movie is so fucked up and twisteddddd) and Nang Nak (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDqew5U68Q4) (a CLASSIC Thai ghost story at love that lasts from beyond the grave and a beautifully sad and wonderful adaptation. And the actor who plays Nak's husband remains one of the most classically handsome Thai men for me. SO MANLY, unf!)
