2010 is upon us! And has been since a few days already. But since I have just arrived back from ~the provinces~, I'll start counting tomorrow. Still, HAPPY NEW YEARS!! Hope it has been a good start for y'all so far! Expect me finally catching up again and oodles of backlogged and 2009 in summary memes to come tomorrow onwards, since I am fond of the idea of filling things out so that I actually have some sort of knowledge what I spent the previous year doing, curse my feeble memory otherwise.

Finished Generation Kill by Evan Wright. I should really get around to typing up a more detailed reaction about it (as I meant to do about uh, ALL THE BOOKS I READ SINCE THE SUMMER, ahem), but suffice to say for now that I was totally engrossed and can still not fully fathom how extreme going into combat and the whole war experience must be. Holy fucking shit. It just blows my mind, no matter how many books I read about it, and I keep counting my blessings that I have never had to experience anything even remotely like this in my life. The way the book itself was written was a weird mix of harrowing (the battles, the lows and the utter fuck-ups of war) and yet amusing in the little ways the Marines managed to find ways to deal with what they were going through on a day-to-day basis. I'll probably order Nate Fick's book as well at some point to get his perspective on things too, and I still really want to watch the HBO Series version.

Most of today was spent “kindzen”—or babysitting Sara, basically. I really have to say that it has generally been a more pleasant experience than I expected. The wonders of an extended attention span in her case, I suppose!

Though I am now kind of sick of the following card games: Spongbob Mau Mau, Diddl Schwarzer Peter and Uno Junior. As a result of Sara being super competitive and unwilling to lose (as little kids are), I have vastly improved my skills in throwing and indefinately extending all these card games as well, so I guess I am set for dealing with any future 4-5 year olds life might throw in my path. And I can finally shuffle cards in that cool, swooshy waterfall way! Which is apparently called a Riffle Shuffle Since I actually spent a summer trying to just "normally" shuffle cards ("Overhand shuffle") to what was middling success, this new development is totally thrilling to me :Db

This all is proving a valuable exercise in pondering the following question though— will I ever really want kids? Hopefully the power of motherly love will be strong. I now do kind of feel so sorry for inflicting my kid self on my parents though, all the high-pitchedness and super over-excitability that comes with young children. Will the good outweigh the bad? Who knows, but I am at least glad that I am kind of fond of Sara now.

New Year's Eve this year was spent not only with drunk old people, but their drunk grandchildren and random friends of grandchildren, too! It was a very interesting insight in how I truly am glad that I am not 15-16 years old anymore, or at least that I am happy that the guys I do know aren't that age still.
Also, I helped Silvia and Oma panier 28(!) Wiener Schnitzel to feed the hungry hoards, plus the giant potato salad and meatloaf that was cooked in the oven. Since our Stammgäste are such creatures of habit (since they have been staying here for the LAST THIRTY YEARS), this menu was of course utterly identical to last years.

For the lulz and because such idiocy still boggles me and thus needs to be shared, two conversations I had with one of the Stammgäste's grandson. Who is 15 years old and lives in a big city in Germany (Frankfurt), and should really know better. He seemed nice enough at first, but oh what idiocy lurked beyond the depths!

CONVERSATION THE FIRST: (talking about music)
DANIEL: What kind of music do you like?
MOI: Well, I do like rock, and I also listen to a lot of Asian music.
DANIEL: And do you speak Asian?
MOI: ........since that is not actually a language, uh, no.
Of course what I should have said in retrospect was "And do you speak European?", but I am not witty in German and was still a bit reeling from the previous 2x4 of ignorance that happened a scant hour earlier

CONVERSATION THE SECOND that actually was chronologically first: (after my Dad called from BKK)
DANIEL: So your Dad is this guy who was wearing that carpet on his shoulder** in the pictures?
MOI: ..........................*epic bitchface of disbelief and thinly restrained cussing-out*

** referring to the fact that my grandparents showed his grandparents and him pictures from my Dad's wedding, where he was wearing something similar to what the guy is wearing on the gif. I mean shit son, it's one thing if you don't know what it's called-- heck, I don't precisely know either, but CARPET?? Oh man oh man. What the hell. These are things I expect from old people who don't know any better, but clearly the youth of today is still a bit ...lacking. I mean, his friends also asked me if Thai was similar to Chinese (since, obviously, all Asian languages are like Chinese and Japanese!), and if I could speak Vietnamese.

And last but not least, another Daniel moment:
DANIEL: *fiddles with pepper shaker, takes it apart, holds up the cover part to his face and blows in it* ...OW MY EYES ARE BURNING. OWW IT REALLY HURTS FUCK.
EVERYONE ELSE: .....LOLOLOL YOU ARE TOO STUPID TO LIVE, JESUS CHRIST BOY.

The fireworks were fantastic as always though, and made even more creepier by fog—limited vision and you could hear the fireworks go off in the distance, the rumbling noise. And it was a full moon!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! What the hell, it is already 2010. A new decade!
Chill day, managed to finish cataloging all my backlog of saved fic (1280 in one folder lol)
Sara made me a muffin with my name on it! Banana walnut and I was touched.
The sheer amount the Stammgäste smoke and drink is simply astounding and unreal. You reek of it already just by sitting in the breakfast room with them

I’m looking forward to Vienna, but not the idea of living w Sabrina in our tiny place again. I hope she’s not back yet, I hope everything is not a morass of filth, oh fuck.

Sitting in the train on the way to Vienna now. My lap is all warm from having whipped out my laptop basically the moment I got settled in the train compartment. Barely an hour left, and we’ll be there. It has been a pleasant ride so far, if I ignore how much my right eye keeps deciding it wants to twitch. But seriously-- oh how I love this OIC 649 train with its direct route. No hassle with having to catch ones next train in time, no panic if you miss it or are otherwise delayed. You just park your ass and sit for 5 hours. Bliss.
There was a helluva lot of snow falling today though, it almost felt like the bus to Zell was traveling through a snowy expanse of nearly nothing. My farewell lunch was a very delightful Rollschinken and Oma’s glorious homemade mashed potatoes.

...AND SUFFICE TO SAY I AM BACK IN MY DORM AND IT LOOKS LIKE UTTER SHIT. YOU SEEM TO BE OUT FOR THE WEEKEND? BUT OOOH THANK YOU FOR THAT STRONG SMELL OF STALE CIGARETTE SMOKE PERMEATING EVERYTHING, SABRINA! THANK YOU FOR THE DUST AND CRAP SWEPT INTO A NICE PILE INBETWEEN OUR DOORS AGAIN, AND THE THREE LARGE BAGS OF TRASH YOU HAVE STASHED UNDER THE SINK AGAIN. I LOOK FORWARD TO THEM STINKING UP EVERYTHING! YOU SEEM TO HAVE WEIRDLY CLEANED BITS OF THE BATHROOM AGAIN, THOUGH I AM A BIT CONFUSED AS TO WHY MY BATHMAT IS ALL SCRUNCHED UP LIKE THAT IN THE CORNER AND A DISHWATER GREY, AND WHY YOU STILL SEEM TO BE ALLERGIC TO BUYING TOILET PAPER. A TISSUE BOX, REALLY? I GUESS SANTA DIDN'T FULFILL MY WISH OF ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS BEING YOU TO GDIAF.

BY JUST AN HOUR. Though yeah, normally 3AM is my limit, too. Got a bit carried away, or rather I spent too long skyping with Carmen and still wanted to stare at fic somewhere and not type things yet. And then I DID decide to post a pre-typed entry, but I hadn't finished it yet and KABOOOM, it was Late.

I AM TYPING A REPLY TO THAT ONE AS WE SPEAK. OR AS I AM DISTRACTED AND REPLYING TO THIS COMMENT INSTEAD FOR THE MOMENT.

♥!
