Bits of 2009, the Nearly Done Now Edition:
...first off, I gotta say that I have given up the idea of posting any pics of Copenhagen or assorted summer things I meant to do, so uh. ADD ME ON FACEBOOK if you haven't already, it's all nice and sorted with ~genius~ commentary, even.OR APPROVE MY FRIEND REQUEST AHEM AHEM YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE ;DD lol j/k take your time, dude ♥
That said, here be a commentated ~~List of Viennese restaurants~~ that Carmen and I (with assorted guest stars and other friends adding to our numbers randomly, of course) visited last year. I was talking to her about how things were waaaay back in the first semester when we weren't that close yet, and remembered that our friendship was basically built on lunch dates. Which we had weekly at the Coffee Day near the uni. Lolol oh how we've improved, to say the least!
JAN
Freiraum ...I think this is the time I ordered a pizza and Carmen got the Bircher müsli and that turned out to be a portion that was smaller than the size of her balled fist. For over 3€. Yeah, we didn't really return after that.
Limes ...classy looking place, classy and filling food. Squid ink and king prawn risotto for Carmen, forest mushroom gnocchi for me. They look like they have a pretty swell Tapas menu, as well.
Chillout-Lounge ...we all need to chill sometime, right? Our DJ salad with avocado and mixed salad + grilled chicken was pretty light on the avocado though. And by light I mean non-existent and it took us a while in the dim lighting to notice this fact.
+ homemade crepe brunch with Michelle and Elli

SEMESTER HOLS, off at home again
MAR
Bombay ...for Wido's birthday celebration. I am not a fan of real spicy food and Indian food in general, so I didn't really like it that much, but the birthday boy and other people who weren't me and Carmen basically loved it, so there is that. You do get tremendously generous portions though, and its a nice home-y place.
Thai Lotus ...Sven was having a hankering for Thai food, and Carmen and I accompanied him on the quest for it. Nice little spot that Miss Olga and her fam also frequent, and I think I had a nice Yam Woon Sen. The others had curries?
Palatschinkenkuchl ...crepes for brunch with Sven, Stephen, Carmen and I! Found out then that Stephen was a snarky delight with a love for TDS/TCR and Threadless tees, ahhh shame about his girlf back in the states lol.
+WHAT DID WE DO FOR CARMEN'S B'DAY?? whut Watched BBT and ordered Akakiko take-out :D, a very chill celebration~
+ Erasmus people shenanigans, lol Praterdome lol
+ Icecream coupe's with Hazel and Carmen at that one place at Schwedenplatz I can never remember the name of
+ Went to Münich to meet with La and Angie, nommed way through there, too.
APR
Plachutta ...ILU 4EVA, Tafelspitz and Plachutta! Much to Carmen's jealousy, the parental and step-parental and sibling units had lunch here, and I got to try things other than the traditional Tafelspitz and additionally steal things off Dad's plate. Which I would call win-win.
Figlmüller ...GIANT SCHNITZEL!!1 Basically Dad, Sue, Ae and I were working our way through an essential stop for Visitors to Vienna. It's a classic and constantly packed for a reason, and their side dishes and fresh grape juice are divine.
Limes ...for all that I was so impressed in January, this time was a total letdown. They fucked up Ae's and my order, and Dad was all "I don't come to Vienna to eat Italian food..." to me afterwards. WHOOPS.
Silberwirt ...Robert has more pleasing to my Dad's tastes Vienna food mojo and rec'ed this place. Which had great portions, delicious cooking and wasn't even that expensive.
Orpheus ...MY BIRTHDAY DINNER. Om nom nom! I still want to go there again and have the Baklava that is basically the size of a small child's head.
+ Visited Carmen in North Germany, oodles of tasty food had there, too. THE MÖVENPICK RESTAURANT, swoooon ♥
MAY
Vapiano ...with Hazel and Carmen. A totally shit day for the Vapiano cooks, everything we ordered basically tasted like crap.
Sawasdee ...every now and then, I can totally get conned into going and trying Thai restaurants in Vienna. Sometimes multiple times a year. Mostly when I feel the need to speak the language to someone not my mom and then surreptitiously whisper to Carmen how everything would totally taste better at home. We had Som Tam, Pak Boong Fai Daeng/Morning Glory and sticky rice and mango for dessert. I was delighted by the fact that the TV in the restaurant was playing old Channel 5 local Thai news reruns lol.
Umar Fisch ...I forgot what the special occasion that Carmen and I decided warranted eating at Umar Fisch and sharing the 40€ platter, but it was fresh seafood-y goodness regardless. Though a bit cramped, table and space-wise, which is probably the norm of EVERYTHING IN THE NASCHMARKT. The couple next to us having an amazingly passive-aggressive "discussion" was at turns entertaining and super awkward though.
+ Wiener Genussfestival with the Erasmus people and Wido & Lena
+ ROMA ROMA ROMA
JUN
phil ...forced to spend far too long here working on a presentation that would get scrapped and waiting for PR UE group members. Bad memories aside, the place looked like a nice cafe.
Café Prückel ...checking out the 1950s retro deco and their famous cakes and Apfelstrudel with Hazel and Carmen. Of course, since I forgot to eat breakfast I was the only one who just ordered an actual meal. Pasta with river crabs and rucola, iirc? It totally hit the spot.
Le Bol ...first time there with Carmen and of course we had no idea that the place is so über popular and comparatively tiny that it is hell to get a walk-in spot. Luckily we just had to stand around aimlessly for a short bit. Their salads are mindblowing, the bread is delicious and their fresh orange juice a delight. The popularity is well and truly earned. Also, the interior and general deco is very charming.
Ra'mien ...a giant noodle-y lunch of great delight for Carmen and moi. Super tasty duck and rice noodles with a flavorful broth for me, and chicken curry and noodles for Carmen. Went another time with Sven and his Erasmus boys, had some fried noodles set then.
Haas & Haas ...right near the Stephansdom! The outdoors eating area is this little private garden that has prime fellow guests people-watching quality, and the food was lovely. Had a parma ham, sun-dried tomato, mozarella and black olive sandwich, and Carmen continued with her grand Viennese Apfelstrudel Taste-testing project.
Da Capo ...Carmen and I decided we needed to reward ourselves after the EVA exam with what some websites say is the best Italian place in Vienna. My socks weren't necessarily blown off, but it was an enjoyable meal, with a more varied clientele than I'd first have guessed and nuances to the dishes that I still think of. My chestnut-fig biscuits that came with the duck I ordered, sighhhh~ Carmen had king prawn and pesto risotto. Tiramisu and creme brulee were the desserts.
Café im Schottenstift ...an old favorite place to sit and read the various newspapers they have and eat their delicious and ever-changing weekly menus. Was alone to run some errands when it started to rain in a most torrential downpour way and ducked in here to wait it out. Had the most fantastic Marillen-Topfen Knödel with Semmelbrösel and some kind of frothy foam delight ♥
+ Irresistible and refreshing ice-cream at Demel, countless visits. I still fantasize about their yogurt ice-cream. And the blueberry-violet one. And the mango, ahhh!
JUL - SEP
SUMMER HOLS, off to touch base at home for the both of us.
OCT
no carmen :(( Bakk2 writing :((
+ basically cooked with and/or bummed food off of Olga at her place like twice a week ♥
+ Travel Shack with Daniela and Romana
+ Ate Elli's belated birthday cake at Michelle's place
NOV
Liounge ...Fondue Chinoise with Hazel and Marius! Carmen wasn't back from Germany yet, so I just met with them earlier. Liounge remains a place where you can stuff yourself to the brim with tasty goodness for what is basically a steal, and Hazel massively kicked the asses of both Marius and myself in that respect. Seriously, she must have a black hole in that tiny, petite frame of hers!
Café Blaustern ...got introduced to this by Daniela and Romana, apparently a favorite haunt of theirs (due to the WU proximity). They have larger portions than you'd expect, and the food really is uniformly well made and has little grace notes of creativity. Also: constant breakfast foods available.
Café Korb ...another one of the classic Viennese coffeeshops that Carmen and I have always tried to visit. They're famous for their UTTERLY GIGANTIC and tastebud-blissing Apfelstrudel, and come served warm. Seriously, these things were monsters :D. Additionally, I had a white wine Riesling soup that was quite possibly one of the best soups I have ever tasted in my entire fucking life. And when I raved about it to the (awesomely Viennese) head waiter, he was all: "Do you want to know the secret of why it's so good? We actually ran out of Riesling and used Veltliner instead. Shhh ;D" lolol. Oh, and they have pervy ASCII toilet signs in the bathrooms downstairs, heh.
Le Bol ...this time, we reserved in advance and managed to snag a table, yesss. Carmen ordered one of their glorious salads again, and I tried out a homemade salmon & spinach quiche, which while good was also one of the most SALTY things I have ever tasted. I knew I should've gone for the plain spinach one! Sadly the portions are always so filling that we were too full to try their delicious looking tarte aux pommes:((
Vapiano ...a pasta-tastic lunch with Olga at the MaHü Vapiano when we attacked the Mariahilfer for some shopping. American Apparel and Thalia and etc~~
Orlando di Castello ...this fancypants place was somewhere Carmen and I'd been meaning to go to since the spring, and we finally made the time. It's ...not a place to go when you're well and truly famished, the location alone hints at the priceyness of everything, but the food you get and the way it's presented really is quite something. Their selection of pastries is also not cheap, but a delight to look at and eat. The main star remains the beautiful restaurant interior and staring at all the little design touches throughout. Their namecards are printed on the back of bits of the store's wallpaper, I was just so tickled by that idea :D Carmen had their deconstructed Caesar salad, while I went for a smoked Eierschwammerl ravioli with Liebstöckl and a christmas-y twist on a Mont Blanc for dessert.
+ had drinks with Daniela & Romana at the Travelshack again twice
+ deconstructed bananananaaaa splits with Olga at her place
+ choc fondue with OODLES OF FRUITS chez Marius with Hazel and Carmen
DEC
Café Blaustern ...quick lunch meet-up with Daniela. Was sick at the time, but had their delicious mango & carrot soup, hot chocolate and their utterly satisfying blueberry pancakes with icing sugar and maple syrup.
Shanghai Tan ...dinner with Carmen and Ines, this time in the pretty lower area that had private little niches. Quite cozy and the food was wonderful as always. Had seafood udon, the sisters M both took the dim sum set and we had the "Glücksbällchen" (...) for dessert, which were iirc little sago? dumplings with a poppy-seed filling in coconut milk.
Chillout-Lounge ...getting out some old reliable stand-bys to entertain her sister. A wok-dish for Ines, some chicken & rice deal for Carmen and ...chicken wings and potato wedges for me.
Stiegl Ambulanz ...dinner and a much needed dethawing. Fuck that day was cold. Stiegl also finally redeemed themselves from their miserable showing in the spring/summer. My duck breast with celery mash was delicious and the sisters M were happy with their food (ox steak and goulash), too. Had some Punsch/hot choc later and were joined by Wido and Lena at the AAKH Christkindlmarkt
Vapiano ...ended up here at the Herrengasse one with Michelle because all our other alternatives at the MQ were full to the bursting (Tanzcafe Leopold I will have lunch in you one day!!). The usual Vapiano fare, though the pizza we shared was tasty.
Sawasdee ...Wido was too much of a dumbass to reserve at the Shanghai Tan in time for his gf's sisters and etc, and then basically prompted me for alternative Asian food ideas and guilted and Daniela to come eat with them, too. Ate the exact same food again and chatted with the owner in Thai some more :D
+ COPENHAGEN OOOOH CAFE NORDEN I will always love you best~~
AND IF YOU READ THROUGH ALL THAT, you now know why I hardly ever go clubbing: I spend all my money on food and eating out :Db And I DO NOT REGRET A THING ♥
